« Migration, media, and stereotypes: cities in France and mediterranean area after 1945 »
Background:
After having questioned, in the introduction, the cosmopolitanism dimension of mediterranean cities on a historical, social and cultural geographical perspectives, this workshop proposes to question the representations, imaginary and stereotypes in terms of immigration from the French case. The first round table will bring together around the question of the emergence in the public space and in particular in the french cities of the young generations resulting from postcolonial immigration in the early 80’s. Those who were called the « Beurs » (« Arabs » in verlan) become a subject of debate abound the identity of urban France, between metissage and racism of part of its population. It is a very important question, still present today : what place is given to postcolonial immigration and their descendants in french society ? The second round table will deal with a case study : the city of Marseille, its cosmopolitanism and its image in France (and maybe other place around mediterranean area). A city apart, where racism manifests itself, but a city that characterizes the ability to welcome foreigners from yesterday to today. Finally, the third round table will insist on the importance of the study of stereotypes and representations to better deconstruct them and envisage a society more open to otherness. At the National Museum of the History of Immigration, a traveling exhibition is under construction on the subject, with the aim of presenting it in many cities of the Mediterranean basin, in order to provoke debate.
The workshop and the speakers should address the main following question
– How to envisage cosmopolitanism in Mediterranean cities using the tools of the various social and human sciences ?
– How did Maghreb immigration and its installation in French society provoke an important debate about national identity ?
– What is the weight of colonization-decolonization on France’s relationship to the question of immigration ?
– How has the memory of the algerian war (1954-62) been and remains a social issue ?
– Is the case of Marseille particular in France on the subject of immigration ? How can such a city serve as an example of welcoming others through its history and current realities ?
– Why is it necessary or even essential to study stereotypes and representations in their evolution to better consider the reception of migrants ?
