Foreign workers in western agriculture: European construction and changes in migrations patterns

Duration of the project: 3 years, 2006-2009.

MIGRAGRI Download the project (in french)

Aims of the project

Western European agricultures nowadays are subject to deep modifications concerning there labour forces. The changing patterns of employment result from increasing international agricultural competition, as well as from European enlargement and new forms of selling procedures. Agricultural wage-earning has been for a long time predominantly occupied by migrant workers. This leads us to discuss the role of international migrations in agriculture. We will then focus on the more and more complex status of migrant workers and on new European migrants.

After having deepened our knowledge about the question in the South of France, and after having identified the different social actors embedded in the process, the project will follow three main aims. First, we will think about this new migration pattern in the set of “new migrations” going through Europe. We will here analyse projects and paths of different migrants groups involved; we will also observe the consequences of those migration flows upon migrants’ micro business strategies in their places of origin. Secondly, the research will focus on health conditions (cares and lack of cares) of these overexploited and precarious workers in their every day life. Following this idea, we will come to the institutional treatment of this unusual labour force. Third, gender issues will be examine, as the number of women in temporary agricultural migrations strongly increases. We will try to understand how women take part in the labour area; we will also analyse the meaning they give to their mobility in order to understand how way their paths differ from men’s paths. All those questions will be considered in a transnational perspective, thanks to fieldwork researches conducted in France as well as in leaving places: Morocco, Poland and Romania.

Expected results:

Through this set of questions and through its multidisciplinary approach, the project wants to enlighten the interactions between migration dynamics and agricultural labour changing patterns.
The results are regularly published in specialized reviews and discussed during internal conferences. The theme will be debated during the international conference to be held at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis in December 2007.

Methods:

The foreseen research is realised with qualitative methods of social sciences. It will go through long-lasting fieldworks, in the South of France as well as in the migrants’ origin areas: Romania, Poland and Morocco.
